Judgment of the EU Court of Justice in Joined Cases Illumina and Grail v EU Commission (updated)

Illumina-Grail merger: The EU Court of Justice sets aside the judgment of the EU General Court and annuls the decisions by which the EU Commission accepted requests from national competition authorities seeking the examination of the proposed concentration. According to the Court, the EU Commission is not authorised to deal with proposed concentrations that have no European dimension. EU Commission EVP Vestager said she will analyse the judgment. She sees a need to review mergers that have a competitive impact in Europe as certain transactions that do not reach EU notification thresholds may nonetheless be harmful to competition in Europe.

On 24 January 2024, the European Commission published a legislative proposal under the ordinary legislative procedure for a new regulation on the screening of foreign investments in the Union.It seeks to revise and repeal Regulation (EU) 2019/452 establishing a framework for the screening of foreign direct investments into the Union.

China: IMF Executive Board concludes 2024 Article IV Consultation

China’s economy has remained resilient despite the continued weakness in the property sector, with GDP growing by 5.2 percent in 2023, and 5 percent y/y in the first half of 2024.
