Shaping the Next Generation of Virtual Worlds – JRC Science for Policy

08 November 2023

What are the next generation virtual worlds? Which challenges and opportunities do they bring in today’s world?

Next generation virtual worlds are a new paradigm largely growing due to the increase of ground-breaking technologies such as the internet of things, artificial intelligence and extended reality, and the transition to the Web 4.0.

This expansion is generating numerous opportunities while also presenting challenges in various areas. These two aspects are analysed in the first JRC report on Next Generation Virtual Worlds, published in July 2023, which provides a techno-economic analysis of the digital ecosystem, identifying current key players in different subdomains related to the topic.

On 8 November, we will present the results of this report and dive into the JRC’s new research perspectives on virtual worlds.

Addressing the next generation virtual world’s challenges will require a common effort from public and private stakeholders, as well as the participation of the civil society.

The event will consist of two sections:

The plenary session will address the general implications and challenges of researching on virtual worlds, as well as the role of the JRC in doing science for policy.

The second part will consist on three parallel sessions focused on different areas of application of next generation virtual worlds.

Join our event on 8 November and be part of the discussion

The first part of the event (9:00-11:00) will be web streamed in the JRC Next Generation Virtual Worlds page.
