The Fourth Meeting of the Collaborative Framework on Critical Materials for the Energy Transition (CFCM) will take place virtually on Tuesday, 15 October 2024.
The fourth meeting of the CFCM will focus on countries sharing experiences on innovation and data governance to address the multiple challenges in securing the supply of critical materials. Among IRENA’s numerous publications on this topic, three recent reports released this year explore different aspects of these challenges. This discussion will be informed by insights from these reports, with presentations by NUPI and IRENA:
- “Critical Materials: Batteries for Electric Vehicles” aims to provide insights into potential trajectories of critical material demand for 2030 within the context of the rapidly evolving EV market. This report investigates how various factors, such as innovation in battery technologies and sizes, affect the balance between the demand and supply of these materials.
- “Constructing a Ranking of Critical Materials for the Global Energy Transition”, developed in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) provides a methodology for countries in creating and maintaining critical material lists for renewable energy applications, highlighting the benefits of designating certain materials as critical.
- “Critical Materials for Renewable Energy: Improving Data Governance”, produced in collaboration with NUPI, explores how improving data governance and establishing a unified data repository for critical materials can enhance data transparency, access, and quality, thereby improving governance and decision-making in critical materials markets.
Following the presentations, members will have the opportunity to provide input on work plans, share lessons learned, and discuss best practices regarding the topics covered.
