Official Council meetings are organised by the Council of the EU and chaired by the Council presidency. However, each Council presidency also organises informal meetings of ministers to discuss initiatives related to a particular topic or Council configuration.

Informal meeting of environment ministers, 11-12 July 2024

The Informal Meeting of Environment Ministers will take place on 11 and 12 July 2024, at the Várkert Bazár in Budapest.

Discussions will focus on climate and environmental issues such as preparations for COP29, circular economy competitiveness, resilient water management, transboundary water and air pollution, EIB green financing.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Informal Meeting of Environment Ministers will take place on 11 and 12 July 2024, at Várkert Bazaar in Budapest. Discussions will focus on climate and environmental issues such as preparations for COP29, circular economy competitiveness, resilient water management, transboundary water and air pollution, financing the green transition.

The road to COP29

On the first day, 11 July, the morning session will be dedicated to the preparations for 29th Conference of the Parties of the United Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) with invited guest speakers. The Presidency will be looking for the views and guidance of Ministers regarding the way towards COP29.

Competitiveness of circular economy

The working lunch discussion will concentrate on the competitiveness aspects of the transition to a circular economy focusing on identifying strategies to ensure that the European Union continues to play a leading role both in global environmental efforts and in maintaining its economic prominence.

Resilient water management

This ministerial debate in the afternoon is going to focus on water resilience with a view to creating cross-sectoral conditions for adaptive and resilient water management with lectures by invited guests.

Transboundary pollution.

On the second day, 12 July, the morning discussion will be devoted to issues regarding transboundary water and air pollution with the aim to find solutions in strengthening transboundary cooperation, both in identifying sources of pollutions, reducing emissions and in providing information. The morning session will be followed by an interactive workshop focusing on the reuse of waste by making crafts out of plastics as well as on the access to safe water. During the working lunch, the European Investment Bank is going to present its financial instruments dedicated to climate action and environmental sustainability.
