As electricity demand from data centres grows, so does the importance of when they consume electricity. Can data centres save money by shifting their electricity consumption away from high-price hours? Our analysis suggests they can.

Across the EU, data centres could shift around 9 TWh of electricity demand in 2030, rising to 19 TWh by 2040. By moving some consumption to periods when electricity is more readily available and prices are lower, this flexibility could reduce their electricity procurement costs by around 5%.

But the potential goes beyond cost savings. Flexible demand can help data centres respond to changing electricity system conditions, while supporting a more efficient and resilient power system as electrification and digitalisation accelerate.
