The Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union will host the Ministerial Meeting on Justice and Home Affairs between the European Union and the United States in Stockholm on 20–21 June.
The EU will be represented by Swedish Minister for Justice Gunnar Strömmer, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson and European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders. They will be joined by the EU Counterterrorism Coordinator and representatives of the EU External Action Service, Europol and Eurojust, as well as the future Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The US delegation will be headed by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.
The meeting aims to strengthen the relationship and cooperation between the EU and the US on issues of common interest relating to Justice and Home Affairs, and to identify priorities for political and operational cooperation.
The meeting will focus on the following topics:
- joint response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine;
- counterterrorism and information-sharing;
- cross-border cooperation in criminal matters and against organised crime;
- an update on progress towards visa reciprocity; and
- priorities of the upcoming Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Background
In the context of the longstanding and comprehensive EU-US Dialogue on Justice and Home Affairs, ministerial meetings between the European Union and the United States take place twice a year. Ministers meet in Europe in the first half of the year and in Washington in the second half.
The main topics of discussion are cooperation in the fight against terrorism and organised crime; information-sharing; judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters and, since 2022, the joint response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in relation to Justice and Home Affairs.
The previous EU-US Ministerial Meeting on Justice and Home Affairs was held in Washington DC on 15 December 2022.
