EU Commissioner Urpilainen travels to Cambodia and Laos to deepen cooperation through Global Gateway

12 March - 15 March

Brussels, 11 March 2024

Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, travels to Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic from 12 to 15 March to drive forward the EU Global Gateway investment plan. Over the three days, the Commissioner will engage with government, business, civil society, and youth representatives to reinforce the partnership with Cambodia and Laos.

In Cambodia, Commissioner Urpilainen will launch two Team Europe Initiatives, one focusing on “Green Agribusiness and Decent Jobs” and the other on “Green Factories and Decent Jobs”. These Initiatives contribute to sustainable growth and decent jobs, by supporting green agri-business, sustainable value chains in selected productive sectors, energy efficiency and renewable energy. Moreover, the Commissioner will sign four Financial Agreements in the areas of sustainable agriculture and food systems, sustainable energy practices in industry, technical education and trade expertise. She will inaugurate the Global Gateway flagship “Education for green and digital jobs” that will contribute to training middle to high-level professional technicians in industrial sectors and boost scholarships.

During the mission, she will discuss the EU-Cambodia partnership with Prime Minister Hun Manet, and visit the Bakheng Water Production Facilities. Commissioner Urpilainen will also visit the Museum of Tuol Sleng and attend a tree planting ceremony at Phnom Penh Thmey primary school.

On Thursday, Commissioner Urpilainen will travel on to Laos to discuss bilateral cooperation and the EU-ASEAN partnership. Laos is currently the ASEAN Chair. One of the main objectives of the mission is to help Laos to create value for its forests by providing tools to promote sustainable land use while increasing domestic production and export. Commissioner Urpilainen will launch the Team Europe Partnership with Laos to boost sustainable trade and investments in agriculture and forestry sectors (TICAF). This programme includes coffee, tea and forest-based value chains, rehabilitation of road infrastructure to facilitate trade to the East and West and a customs programme.

Audiovisual coverage will be available on EbS. More information on new programmes will be available following their launch in the websites of the EU Delegation to Cambodia and the EU Delegation to the Lao PDR.
