EU Commissioner Reynders in Warsaw to discuss rule of law matters in Poland

Tomorrow, Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, will be in Warsaw to meet government ministers, members of the judiciary and civil society organisations to discuss rule of law matters and judicial reform in the country.

Commissioner Reynders will begin his visit by meeting with Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski. They will have the opportunity to discuss the illegal Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and national compliance with rulings of the European Court of Justice and the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Commissioner will then meet Minister for European Affairs, Adam Szłapka, to discuss Poland’s milestone on judicial independence under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, and the ongoing Article 7 procedure. This will be followed by a meeting with Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar to discuss, among other topics, the state of the judiciary and the follow-up to the announcement by Poland of its intention to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Commissioner Reynders and Minister Bodnar will debrief the media on their exchanges during a joint press conference tomorrow at 13:30 CET. The Commissioner will conclude his visit by meeting with the Polish judges’ association “Themis” and “Iustitia”, the prosecutor’s association “Lex Super Omnia”, the Helsinki Foundation of Human Rights and the Batory foundation to gather their views on strengthening the rule of law in Poland.
