EU Commission President von der Leyen travels to the Faroe Islands and Greenland

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will travel to the Faroe Islands and Greenland, tomorrow and Friday, together with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.

The President will be in Tórshavn tomorrow, where she will meet the Prime Minister of Faroe Islands, Aksel V. Johannesen, together with Prime Minister Frederiksen. The President and the Faroese Prime Minister are expected to sign a declaration on enhanced co-operation between the EU and the Faroe Islands, followed by a press conference.

Later in the day, the President and the two Prime Ministers will meet with representatives of a national company aiming to grow seaweed to absorb carbon, to mitigate climate change. They will also visit the facilities of a major producer of renewable energy in the Faroe Islands.

On Friday, President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Frederiksen will travel to Nuuk, Greenland, where they will meet the Prime Minister of Greenland, Múte Bourup Egede.

The three leaders are expected to sign agreements in the areas of education and green, as well as the establishment of an Office of the European Commission in Greenland. President von der Leyen will then visit the facilities of the new EU Office. A press conference with the President and the two Prime Ministers will take place following the signatures.

The EU updated its Arctic policy in 2021. President von der Leyen‘s visits highlight the EU’s commitment to invest in a sustainable, prosperous, and peaceful Arctic region.
