EU Commission President von der Leyen and EU Council President Michel participate in the EU-Canada Summit

23 November 2023 - 24 November 2023

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will participate in the 19th EU-Canada Summit that will take place next 23-24 November, together with the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

They will meet the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, in St John’s, in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The meeting will be an important step in taking forward an already thriving and unique partnership with a strategic, like-minded partner like Canada.

In particular, they will discuss our common fight against climate change and biodiversity loss, cooperation on new technologies, research and innovation, and building a sustainable and resilient economy.

This meeting will also be the occasion to take stock of the progress achieved on the commitments reached during the last EU-Canada Summit in 2021.

The Summit will reaffirm the strengthening of the EU’s and Canada’s economic relationship, which has already significantly benefited from the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). In particular, the Summit will contribute to concretely take forward work on the EU-Canada Strategic Partnership on Critical Raw materials, and elevate cooperation on climate, green energy, and digital issues.

Finally, the leaders will underline the steadfast and united response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and address other geopolitical issues.
