EU Commission and Belgian FSMA organise event on financial literacy

20 February

Brussels, 19 February 2024

Tomorrow, the European Commission and the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) will host a high-level conference on financial literacy, resilience and inclusion in Brussels.

The conference will bring together EU and global experts, policy makers, regulators, academics, and representatives from civil society organisations. The discussions will focus on the role of financial education in promoting financial resilience, evidence-based policy measures and best practices in this domain, as well as the influence of digitalisation on financial inclusion, alongside other topics.

Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness, and FSMA and IOSCO Chair, Jean-Paul Servais, will open the event. OECD Deputy Secretary-General, Yoshiki Takeuchi, and Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Vincent Van Peteghem, will give keynote speeches. Director of the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Rohit Chopra, Belgium’s State Secretary for Budget and Consumer Protection, Alexia Bertrand, and Bank of Finland Deputy Governor, Marja Nykäne, are among the participants.

Commissioner McGuinness said:

“We need to talk more about money – how to manage it, save it, invest it and make it work for us. Because money matters. Research shows that financial literacy skills in Europe are not what they should be. Now is the time to address this – to help people make informed decisions about their money.  So, I’m very happy that together with the Belgian Presidency we are bringing together global experts, policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, civil society and academics to discuss ways to boost financial literacy levels in the EU and exchange best practice. This is not only good for individual citizens but for society as a whole.”

The full programme and webstreaming are available online. More information on the Commission’s work to promote financial literacy is available here.
