EU citizenship and European Elections: Experts to present possible improvements

The Committee on Constitutional Affairs will discuss on Wednesday potential Treaty revisions for EU citizenship and the way forward to the 2024 elections.

The hearing “Towards the European Elections 2024” aims to capitalise on the remarkable increase in turnout rates of the last election, which ignited a momentum for the launch of a deeper process of democratisation of the Union. MEPs will exchange views with Prof. Steven Van Hecke, Associate professor in comparative and EU Politics at the KU Leuven Public Governance Institute, and Mr Francesco Grillo, Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute and Affiliate Professor at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa.

When: Wednesday 20 September 2023, 9.10 – 10.15 CEST

Later on the same day, the hearing on “Implementation of the Treaty provisions on EU citizenship” will focus on the state of play and on identifying areas that need improvement. The guest speakers are Prof. Freixes, Jean Monnet ad Personam Professor in Constitutional Law & Vice President of RAED, and Ms Kavrakova, Executive Director of the ECAS.
