Scope and objectives

On 12 June 2024, the EESC will hold a public hearing in connection with its ongoing opinion on Aligning the circular economy and the bioeconomy at EU and national level which aims to enhance the synergy between bioeconomy, circularity, and sustainability by adopting a more integrated and systemic perspective on the circular bioeconomy.

The event will delve into the potential of a sustainable and circular bioeconomy by exploring policy options and practical solutions aimed at forging resilient bioeconomies that maximise the value of locally available biomass while creating job opportunities and benefits for businesses and communities.

In particular, the public hearing seeks to:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the political landscape of the circular economy and bioeconomy, including overlaps and joint challenges;
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange about circular bioeconomy solutions among organised civil society;
  • Discuss how sustainability and circular economy principles could be applied in the bioeconomy sector to achieve consistency with our environmental and climate objectives.

The event will be webstreamed freely on this website and interpreted into EN, FR and DE. Participants will be able to interact using Slido with code #CircularBioeconomy.

Context

Despite their similarities and synergies, the circular economy and bioeconomy have distinct characteristics that need to be understood. A system-thinking approach is essential to sustainably optimise the use of bioresources. As demand for biomass increases, it is crucial to navigate the potential positive and negative impacts on biodiversity, climate change, ecosystem services, and environmental limits.

Circular bioeconomy is especially crucial for revitalizing rural areas by creating job opportunities, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable resource management in key sectors such as farming, forestry, and coastal industries, thereby enhancing the resilience and competitiveness of rural communities.
