DIGCLASS seminar series: 4th session on a brief history of equality

The fourth session of the 2023-2024 DIGCLASS seminar series on a brief history of equality by Thomas Piketty will take place next Tuesday, January 23rd, from 15.00 to 16.00 (CET) in an open-access online format.

This presentation on a brief history of equality will show the evolution of socioeconomic and political equality in the 21st century.

This talk by Thomas Piketty is the 4th session of the 2023-2024 DIGCLASS seminar series.

A Brief History of Equality

In this talk, Thomas Piketty will present some recent findings from the World Inequality Report 2022 and the World Inequality Database. He will also draw lessons from his book “A Brief History of Equality” (Harvard University Press 2022) for the evolution of socioeconomic and political equality in the 21st century.

 

Speaker

Thomas Piketty is Professor of Economics and Economic History at EHESS and at the Paris School of Economics. His research lies at the intersection of historical economics, political economy and socio-economic history. He is the author of research articles published in journals such as the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Political Economy, the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, Explorations in Economic History, Annales: Histoire, Sciences Sociales. He has done historical and theoretical work on the interplay between economic development, the distribution of income and wealth, and political conflict.These works have led to emphasize the role of political, social and fiscal institutions in the historical evolution of income and wealth distribution. Thomas Piketty is also co-director of the World Inequality Lab and the World Inequality Database, and one of initiators of the Manifesto for the democratization of Europe. He is the author of several books including Capital in the 21st century (2014), Capital and ideology (2020) and A Brief History of Equality (2022).

The DIGCLASS seminar series is expected to facilitate the exchange of cutting-edge ideas and debates related to social inequality, labour economics and political economy between JRC researchers and beyond by attracting external scholars, policy-makers and a general audience.
