Conference to prevent and combat smuggling of firearms in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine – possible measures for enhanced customs cooperation

The Conference will be chaired by Dr Anna-Carin Svensson, Director-General for International Affairs, and will focus on possible measures for enhanced customs cooperation regarding the smuggling of firearms in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Opening remarks by Gunnar Strömmer, Minister for Justice.

The format will be interactive and action-oriented, with a focus on panel discussions and breakout sessions. The panel discussions will include the threat from illicit firearms and challenges regarding diversion and smuggling of firearms and small arms and light weapons (SALW).

Oleksii Kalynovych, Deputy Head of the State Customs Service of Ukraine will present the situation in Ukraine regarding weapons control, registration, tracing and recovery of firearms in the context of Russia’s war of aggression.

Participants will be representatives from customs authorities in the EU as well as from third countries. Key international stakeholders such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the World Customs Organization (WCO), Europol, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME), the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the Folke Bernadotte Academy will also be represented.
