Cancer survivorship: Advancing the right to be forgotten

14 May

Stocktaking of progress and challenges

Thanks to advances in early cancer detection, effective therapies and supportive care, the prognosis for a cancer diagnosis is better than ever before. Survival rates have increased markedly over the last 20 years, resulting in more than 12 million persons with a history of cancer in Europe alone. Yet, for some obstacles persist when accessing financial services, even years after the end of their treatment.

As part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, the Commission is closely examining practices in the area of financial services from the point of view of fostering access for persons with a history of cancer in long term remission. This meeting aims to take stock of progress so far and to continue the dialogue towards ensuring that only necessary and proportionate information is used when assessing the eligibility of applicants for financial products.
