AI Skills at Work: Building a competitive EU labour market

11 June

Brussels, Belgium, 11 June 2026

As the European Union advances its Union of Skills agenda and pursues the objectives of the Digital Decade, the intersection of skills policy, labour market reform and competitiveness has become a central element of the EU’s economic strategy. Against this backdrop, the conference “AI Skills at Work: Building a Competitive EU Labour Market” will bring together policymakers, business leaders, labour market experts, education providers and international organisations to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on Europe’s workforce.

Hosted by FT Live in partnership with LinkedIn, the event will explore how AI is transforming labour markets, productivity and workforce requirements across sectors. Discussions will focus on the opportunities and challenges created by AI-driven change, including skills shortages, workforce preparedness, reskilling needs and the implications for social cohesion and economic competitiveness.

Participants will assess emerging labour market trends and examine how Europe can develop an AI-ready workforce capable of competing in a rapidly evolving global economy. Particular attention will be given to the role of public-private cooperation in expanding digital skills, supporting lifelong learning and ensuring that the benefits of AI-driven innovation are broadly shared across society.

The conference will also address how policymakers can balance the promotion of innovation with the need to provide workers and businesses with the tools and support required to adapt successfully to technological change. Discussions will draw on labour market data, practical implementation experiences and policy initiatives aimed at strengthening Europe’s long-term competitiveness.

The event forms part of the broader European debate on digital transformation, workforce development and economic resilience, highlighting the strategic importance of AI skills for the future of the Single Market.
