Agenda of the EU-Japan summit, 13 July 2023

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, representing the EU, will meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the 29th EU-Japan summit in Brussels.

This summit provides an opportunity to display the increasingly deep and dynamic alliance between the EU and Japan.

EU-Japan relations

Japan is the EU’s closest strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

EU-Japan relations are based on a strategic partnership agreement (SPA) and a free trade agreement (economic partnership agreement).

EU and Japan leaders will review progress made in implementing

  • the connectivity partnership
  • the green alliance
  • the digital partnership

They are also expected to discuss the following topics

  • international and regional developments – including Russia’s aggression against Ukraine – China and the Indo-Pacific
  • cooperation on security issues
  • economic security

Background

The last EU-Japan summit took place in Tokyo, Japan, on 12 May 2022.

During the summit, the leaders of the EU and Japan launched the EU-Japan Digital Partnership to advance cooperation on a wide range of digital issues.
