Rapid and structural responses to the current situation in the agricultural sector: follow-up

Based on information from the European Commission, agriculture ministers will exchange views as a follow-up to the work carried out by the Commission following the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting that took place on 26 February 2024.

 

Market situation, in particular following the invasion of Ukraine

The Council will discuss the current situation on the EU’s agricultural markets, in particular following Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The exchange of views will be based on information from the European Commission and member states.

The Ukrainian Minister for Agrarian Policy and Food, Mykola Solskyi, will address the Council before the ministers’ exchange of views.

Other business

Among the ‘Other business’ items on the agenda, the Belgian presidency will publicly provide information on the events it has organised on the future of agriculture and the common agricultural policy (CAP).

Also in public session, the presidency will present the outcome of the ‘Call to care for animal welfare’ symposium (Brussels, 29 January 2024), while the Spanish delegation will provide information on the recent fisheries-related judgment of the Court of Justice in case C-330/22. The Portuguese delegation will publicly provide information on European maritime, fisheries and aquaculture support.

Additionally, at the request of the French delegation, there will be an ‘Other business’ item on the upcoming selection of a new Director-General for the World Organisation for Animal Health. The Austrian delegation will provide information on challenges for European agriculture and forestry businesses posed by the deforestation regulation, while the Lithuanian delegation will inform the Council on the outcome of the meeting of Nordic-Baltic ministers responsible for agriculture.

Finally, at the request of the Spanish delegation there will be a public ‘Other business’ item on the topic of new genomic techniques.
