Brussels, 16 January 2025

Today the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), as part of Horizon Europe, Europe’s largest research programme, has launched a new call: the creation of its tenth Knowledge and Innovation Community (KICs): EIT Water.

This new innovation community will focus on the field of aquatic, marine and maritime sectors and ecosystems, and will tackle major challenges such as water scarcity, droughts, floods and degradation of marine and freshwater waters. With this call, the EIT invites in particular universities, research institutes and companies to present their vision and strategy for the new KICs.

The EIT KICs are large-scale, pan-European partnerships that bring together educational institutions, research organisations and businesses to create a pipeline of innovative products and services. They receive funding from the EIT for a maximum period of fifteen years. EIT Water can expect an initial budget of up to €5 million in 2026.

The EIT Water will join the EIT’s nine existing KICs active in the fields of climate, digital, energy, health, raw materials, food, manufacturing, urban mobility and culture and creativity. To date, the EIT and its KICs have qualified more than 800,000 learners in the fields of innovation, entrepreneurship and deep tech, launched thousands of new products and services on the market and supported more than 10,000 companies that have raised almost €10 billion in private and public funding and represent €72 billion.
