Today, the European Commission has appointed Emanuele Tarantino as Chief Competition Economist at the Directorate-General for Competition (DG COMP). This department of the Commission works to ensure that all companies compete equally and fairly on their merits within the single market to benefit consumers, businesses, and the European economy. The date of effect will be determined later.

Mr Tarantino, an Italian national, has a distinguished academic background and 15 years of experience in economic analysis and competition policy, which gave him a deep understanding of market dynamics and regulatory frameworks. His track record in advising governmental and private institutions highlights his ability to provide strategic and informed guidance on complex economic issues, which makes him highly suitable to advise on the economic aspects relating to the policy development and enforcement of competition rules in the EU.

Following a PhD in Economics at the ‘European University Institute’, Italy, Emanuele Tarantino has held high-level academic and institutional positions. He is currently a Professor of Economics at Luiss University and a Research Affiliate at the ‘Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance’ in Italy and at the ‘Centre for Economic Policy Research’ in the UK. Mr Tarantino is also an Academic Advisor at the Banco de España, and a member of the Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy at DG COMP. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Mannheim, Germany.
