Brussels/Warsaw, 5 June 2023
EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson is in Poland today to engage with mayors from the EU and third countries to discuss the importance of the clean-energy transition and how the work done at the level of cities can help to ensure progress towards our net zero climate goal. The event will take place in the context of the 3rd Summit of the Pact of Free Cities.
In Warsaw, the Commissioner is also meeting with the Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the Polish Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa to discuss the energy security and Polish energy transition efforts.
Poland was particularly affected by Gazprom’s disruption of gas deliveries in April last year. Thanks to key, EU-funded infrastructure, Poland has undertaken successful diversification efforts and encouraged significant rollout of renewables, with the biggest success in the rooftop solar deployment. Poland installed the third-highest amount of new solar power capacity in the European Union in 2022.
