The launch of a strategic partnership between Ukraine and the European Union in the raw materials sector was discussed by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič during a meeting on 13 July.
The Head of Government noted that this is the second, after energy, strategic partnership between Ukraine and the EU, which is proof of a high level of bilateral cooperation.
“The strategic partnership will allow us to deepen cooperation in the field of raw materials. Significant potential of mineral resources in Ukraine, as well as the need to modernize the mining and processing industry of Ukraine, improving the legislative and administrative base for investors, will be a strong basis for our partnership,” stressed Denys Shmyhal.
The Prime Minister noted that Ukraine is ready to strengthen its participation in the European Commission’s Raw Materials Supply Group, given the strategic level of relations with the EU in the raw materials sector. According to him, this cooperation tool will facilitate the joint development with the European Union of approaches to using Ukraine’s potential in the extractive industry to help the EU build globally competitive value-added chains in Europe.
Vice President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič, for his part, noted that the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU opens wide opportunities for cooperation in various fields.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed cooperation in combating climate change, the transition to carbon neutrality, the involvement of Ukrainian companies in various European programs and the conclusion of an “industrial visa-free regime.”
