Brussels, 11 January 2022

Statements by the Spokesperson:

“The EU condemns the launches of missiles by the DPRK, which occurred most recently on January 5 and 11. The DPRK’s continued pursuit of illegal weapons systems is a threat to international peace and security and goes against international efforts to resume dialogue and engage in actions to help its people.

The EU calls on the DPRK to comply with its obligations under UN Security Council Resolutions and refrain from all actions that undermine the environment for pursuing diplomacy and dialogue.

The EU urges the DPRK to respond constructively to the readiness for diplomacy expressed by the United States and the Republic of Korea and engage in actions towards denuclearisation.

The EU is committed to the objective of the DPRK abandoning its weapons of mass destruction, ballistic missile and existing nuclear programmes in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.

Until the DPRK complies with its obligations under UN Security Council Resolutions, the EU will continue to implement sanctions strictly while encouraging the international community to do the same.”
