The Commission is aware of reports and articles dealing with the incidents that led to the damages on gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The investigation of damages and their likely cause are the responsibility of authorities in the Member States concerned. At the moment, all available information indicates those leaks are the result of a deliberate act.

The Commission is aware of reports and articles dealing with the incidents that led to the damages on gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The investigation of damages and their likely cause are the responsibility of authorities in the Member States concerned. At the moment, all available information indicates those leaks are the result of a deliberate act.
The Commission is still assessing the potential legal ramifications of these incidents, including from the perspective of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Safety assessments of Swedish vital infrastructure is primarily the responsibility of the competent authorities of Sweden. In the context of its support to Member States, the Commission engages with Member States and the European External Action Service in a regular exchange on the threat picture for critical infrastructure. The Commission is also working with Member States to enhance preparedness, response and international cooperation as laid out in the proposal for a Council Recommendation on a coordinated approach by the EU to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure1.
