The EU and Republic of Moldova held the sixth meeting of their Association Council. The Association Council took stock of the implementation of progress of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement since the previous Association Council of 30 September 2019, and discussed the strengthening of cooperation in a wide range of areas, with particular focus on: energyreformsforeign and security affairs, and Transnistria.

“The clear results of the election gave a strong mandate to the Moldovan government to implement an ambitious anti-corruption agenda, improve the justice system and fight poverty in line with the obligations under the Association Agreement. Our discussions took place in the context of the emergency situation in Moldova’s gas sector. We see attempts by Gazprom to put political pressure in return for lower gas prices. Our main message is that the EU stands ready to support Moldova to find a way out of this crisis. – Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

“Today we have discussed the progress made in implementing the Association Agreement. We have reaffirmed Moldova’s European aspirations and our determination to respect and stand by our commitments. It is not just a statement, it is the clear political mandate given to our government following the early parliamentary elections. This is what citizens at home expect from us. Moldova is interested in playing a more active role in the Eastern Partnership. We want the Eastern Partnership Summit to be a successful event, with an ambitious agenda for cooperation and opportunities for integration for associated partners. – Natalia Gavrilița, Prime minister of the Republic of Moldova

The Association Council also discussed solidarity in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Moldova’s commitment to the Eastern Partnership.
