Leading international experts in the field of addiction science will gather in Lisbon from 23–25 November 2022 for the fourth European Conference on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (‘Lisbon Addictions 2022’). Under the overarching theme of Global Addictions, the event will showcase the latest scientific knowledge in this domain and explore challenges relating to illicit drugs, alcohol, tobacco, screen addiction, gambling and other addictive behaviours. It is the largest European conference in the area of addictions.
A record 1 800 participants from 85 countries have registered for ‘Lisbon Addictions 2022’, which will showcase cutting-edge research to help understand and respond to today’s addictions and addictive behaviours. The event is organised by: the Portuguese General Directorate for Intervention on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (SICAD); the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA); the journal Addiction/Society for the Study of Addiction (Addiction/SSA); and the International Society of Addiction Journal Editors (ISAJE). SICAD Director-General João Goulão and EMCDDA Director Alexis Goosdeel will deliver the welcoming remarks.
During the three days, over 1 000 presentations will be given across almost 200 sessions, including plenaries, ‘big debates’, workshops and guided e-poster tours. Some 25 internationally renowned researchers and professionals will be contributing with their expertise in keynote speeches and on panels. Topics will be explored from a variety of angles, from international policies and interventions, to innovative methods and human rights.
Once again, a ‘co-production’ approach has been used to shape the conference programme around thematic tracks, aiming to develop a rich, diverse and innovative event. The ‘co-producers’ of these tracks are the European Society for Prevention Research (EUSPR); the International Network on Health and Hepatitis in Substance Users (INHSU); the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Addictions (ISSBA); the European Federation of Addiction Societies (EUFAS); the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy (ISSDP), the Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA) and Inter-GLAM, an EU-funded project to explore global perspectives and trends that shape drug markets and addictions.
The eight co-produced thematic tracks are:
- Global perspectives on addictions and drug markets
- Prevention cultures
- Alcohol dependence and problems
- Addictions and mental health
- Hepatitis C, other infectious diseases and drug-related harms
- Behavioural addictions
- Current and future challenges in global drug policy
- Open track (for presentations not fitting into the above categories).
Plenary sessions will set the scene at the start of each day:
- Plenary I: Ensuring adequate pain relief whilst reducing addiction risk: lessons learnt and the way forward
- Plenary II: Re-imagine recovery
- Plenary III: Social inequality in drinking, underage drinking and the alcohol industry.
‘Big debates’ will also be a prominent feature of the programme, where experts will exchange views and experiences on key questions related to ‘Global Addictions’:
- Big debate I: Psychedelic-assisted treatment for substance use disorders – long overlooked or now overhyped?
- Big debate II: Addiction, compulsive behaviours and unhealthy habits – A common aetiology and implications for practice?
The conference provides a unique professional networking opportunity for researchers, practitioners and policy experts across countries and disciplines to address new challenges and developing fields.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), two of the international organisations present at the event, will be offering three lunch-time sessions:
- 23 November 12.30–13.10 — Designing focused, tailored and prioritised HIV and viral hepatitis interventions for people who use drugs (UNODC and WHO)
- 23 November 12.20–13.10 — Alcohol at the intersection of policy and science (WHO)
- 24 November 12.20–13.10 — Public health dimensions of psychoactive drugs and addictive behaviours in WHO activities and products (WHO)
