Today, Vice-President Věra Jourová officially launched the negotiations aimed at the creation of the interinstitutional Ethics Body, following the publication of the Commission’s proposal. The meeting includes high level representatives from eight institutions – the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, the European Court of Auditors, the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions – to agree on the details of an ambitious  interinstitutional Ethics Body that would set high standards strengthening the transparency and integrity of public officials serving  at EU institutions.

Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová said:

“Just a few weeks after we proposed the Ethics Body, we hold a first meeting to discuss the details and ensure participation of all institutions. This is a testament to the ambition of the Commission, to set up the new Body very fast. I encourage all institutions to continue to work hard to conclude this important agreement and ensure that the Body can begin its work as soon as possible. We must do everything to deserve trust of the European citizens and make sure that all public officials are subject to the same clear and high-standard ethical rules.”

Once the new Body is established of the Body, a first set of common standards for ethical conduct of members of all institutions will be developed, as well as a formal mechanism for cooperation among institutions.
