Today, the High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell concluded his visit to India, where he participated in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting and the Raisina Dialogue.
On Wednesday, 1 March, the High Representative Josep Borrell delivered a speech at the India-Europe Business and Sustainability Conclave. He also met with India’s Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. They discussed key issues ahead of the G20, such as Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, or the global debt crisis.
On Thursday, 2 March, the High Representative participated in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meetings. During the first session on strengthening multilateralism, the High Representative focused his interventions on Russia’s blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, and its global consequences, in particular on energy and food insecurity. He also highlighted the importance of a stronger multilateralism system, fit for the future, as well as the crucial need to speed up the green transition to address the existential threats of climate change and biodiversity loss globally. During the second session on counter terrorism and humanitarian action, the High Representative focused on new threats enabled by technologies, highlighting the worrying use of disinformation and cyber malicious activities in particular around Russia’s war against Ukraine. He reiterated the importance of reacting, but also pre-empting these threats. He also set out the EU’s strong commitment as humanitarian assistance provider around the world, from Yemen to Turkey, from the Darién Gap to Myanmar.
Today, 3 March, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell participated in a panel discussion during the Raisina Dialogue under the title “The New High Table: Realigning the G20 in a changing world”. The High Representative stressed the crucial need for multilateral solutions and the role that the G20 has to play in this regard. Check his intervention here.
The High Representative also exchanged views with a group of leading Indian women together with the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna, as France takes over the EU Gender Champion role in India for the next six months.
During his visit, the High Representative had bilateral discussions with the Foreign Ministers of Singapore, Indonesia, Egypt, Nigeria, Armenia and Bangladesh.
