Tomorrow, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, will participate at the meeting of the EU Network of National Coordinators and Rapporteurs, on trafficking in human beings. The meeting takes place on 17-18 June in Brussels, chaired by the EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator and the Presidency of the Council.
It will gather representatives from Member States, EU agencies and non-governmental organisations. The participants will address the existing challenges in detecting and combatting trafficking in human beings, including exploitation in high-risk sectors, protection of victims, prevention and cross-border cooperation between Member States and the private sector. They will also focus on trafficking carried out with the purpose to force persons to engage in criminal activities.
In April 2021, the EU launched a Strategy to combat human trafficking, focusing on prevention, justice, and victim support. This supported the Commission proposal in December 2022 on a revision of the Trafficking in Human Directive, adopted by co-legislators on 27 May 2024. The updated Directive provides stronger tools for law enforcement and judicial authorities to investigate and prosecute new forms of exploitation. Once published in the Official Journal, the Directive will enter into force 20 days after publication and Member States will have 2 years to transpose the provisions of the Directive into national law, on 27 May 2024.
