The European Commission has decided today to appoint Marco Marsella as Director for ‘Digital, EU4Health and Health Systems Modernisation’ at the Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE). This Commission department is responsible for EU policy on food safety and health and for monitoring the implementation of related laws. The date of effect will be determined later.

With more than 23 years of outstanding experience in senior management positions at the Commission in various policy areas, Mr Marsella is particularly well-suited to take on the many challenges incurred by his new position. He is endowed with established skills in providing effective leadership and management and has a demonstrated capacity for implementing sound strategic coordination across Commission structures. In addition to being equipped with key management skills, Mr Marsella will also draw on his unique expertise in the development and changing nature of digital technologies and innovation in the area of health.

Mr Marsella, an Italian national, is currently holding the position of Deputy Director for ‘Digital Society, trust and Cybersecurity’ in the Directorate-General Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT). He is also Head of Unit ‘Ehealth, wellbeing and ageing’ in the same DG, were he had a leading role for the development of the EU Digital COVID Certificate.

Mr Marsella joined the Commission in 2000, he holds a Degree in Computer Science.
