Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen is in Nuuk, Greenland, today and tomorrow to discuss Arctic security, critical infrastructure, connectivity and the European Union’s partnership with Greenland. During her visit, Executive Vice-President Virkkunen will meet Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Premier Minister of Greenland, as a follow up to a meeting between the two last year.
The trip follows the visit of the President Ursula von der Leyen in September 2026, during which the EU, Greenland and Denmark signed a Joint Declaration. It comes also as the EU prepares a new Arctic Strategy to reflect evolving priorities including security, defence, connectivity and economic security. Furthermore, it builds on already close cooperation in many important areas under the portfolio of Executive Vice-President Virkkunen, such as connectivity.
Today, she will meet Mariane Paviasen Jensen, Minister for Children, Youth, Justice and Gender Equality, and Iddimanngiiu Jensen Bianco, Minister for Housing, Infrastructure, Outer Districts, and Preparedness. She will then visit the Joint Arctic Command, which is tasked with protecting the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark in the Arctic region, to exchange views on Arctic security with its Head, Søren Andersen.
Tomorrow, Executive Vice-President Virkkunen will meet Christian Keldsen, Chief Executive Officer of Business Greenland, before meeting Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Premier Minister of Greenland. She will conclude the visit with a tour of the Tusass satellite ground station alongside its Chief Executive Officer, Jonas Hasselriis.
Greenland is an integral part of the EU’s Arctic policy. Our partnership supports Greenland in the pursuit of its own objectives in terms of growth, security and connectivity. The Commission has proposed increasing EU financial support from €225 million in 2021–2027 to €530 million in 2028–2034.
