The European Parliament backed the new generation of European partnerships under the Horizon Europe programme, on Thursday.

The nine partnerships under Horizon Europe cover areas as diverse as clean aviation, hydrogen, the circular economy for the environment, rail, global health and innovative medicines. Together, they aim to accelerate the transition to a green, green and digital Europe and make European industry more resilient and competitive.

Total investments will be over €20 billion, of which at least half will be borne by the private partners of these initiatives.

“For those who imagine that all this is rhetoric and good intentions, a simple example will suffice. A few days ago, the World Health Organization approved for the first time the use of a malaria vaccine for children in sub-Saharan African countries and other countries heavily affected by this disease. This vaccine was developed thanks to the strong direct and indirect involvement of the EDCTP [European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership], a partnership that will not only continue, but will be strengthened in this unique act called Global Health. This is an example of the extraordinary potential of these initiatives and I am sure that others will follow”, said lead MEP Maria da Graça Carvalho (EPP, PT) during the plenary debate.

Other examples include a new generation of commercial aircraft with reduced CO2 emissions, innovative medicines, production in the digital sector and more efficient management of raw materials and natural resources. “These partnerships are doors opening for our common future in Europe,” she concluded.

The report was adopted in plenary with 624 votes in favour, 39 against and 33 abstentions.
