S&D Group leader Iratxe García calls for a progressive EU competitiveness strategy that is fit for today’s and tomorrow’s world
Following former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi’s report presentation on EU competitiveness to the leaders of the European Parliament’s political groups, Iratxe García urged Mario Draghi to deliver a proposal capable of modernising and decarbonising our industries, focusing on well-being, quality jobs, and affordable energy prices.
S&D Group president, Iratxe García, said:
“The EU needs proposals to tackle current challenges, such as climate change and social cohesion. We need to modernize the EU’s economy to be fit for the future, with a European agenda based on social justice, climate fairness, and economic stability.
“Our future depends on a holistic idea of competitiveness: a strong social commitment in the areas of employment, equality and non-discrimination, and enhancing the environment and climate agenda. Competitiveness means industrial growth, but also financing the social dimension.
“Sustained public investment and sufficient financial resources are key to bridge the funding gap for European public goods through both the European budget and a new investment instrument, such as an investment capacity. This is crucial not only for financing our key priorities, such as the green and digital transitions, but also for strengthening Europe’s industrial base and global competitiveness.
“For this, the investment capacity needs to support a new EU Green Industrial Plan capable of achieving a competitive and green reindustrialisation built on quality jobs and affordable energy prices. A Green Deal Industrial Plan and a ‘Buy Green and European Act’ with reasonable price ceilings to prevent any abuse are essential. We also ask for a review of the current tax rules and the completion of the capital markets.
“We need Mario Draghi to deliver on his promises and we need unity between the pro-European and democratic forces in the European Parliament to strengthen an EU that is fit for today’s and tomorrow’s most pressing challenges.”

EU competitiveness relaunch a priority for Renew Europe
Following an exchange of views with Mario Draghi today in the European Parliament, ahead of the expected launch of his report on EU competitiveness, Renew Europe President Valérie Hayer strongly welcomed the exchange and looks forward to the report’s publication. Renew Europe hopes and expects that the reports written by both Mr Draghi and Mr Letta will become a key foundation of the policy programme of the incoming European Commission.
In February, Renew Europe adopted a paper and ten-point plan to relaunch the EU’s competitiveness. This paper was addressed to Mario Draghi, former ECB President, in a formal letter. Enhancing European competitiveness and prosperity remains a key pillar of Renew Europe’s expectations for the incoming European Commission.
Commenting after the exchange of views with Mr Draghi, President of Renew Europe, Valérie Hayer, said:
“European competitiveness is a top priority for Renew Europe and we look forward to Mr Draghi’s report. At a time when Europe is losing its cutting edge to the US and China, there is no time to lose.
We want the next European Commission to be better at implementing EU legislation and to show greater ambition regarding the reforms that are needed to make Europe more competitive and autonomous. We cannot fall victim to the false dichotomy of extremist politicians of choosing between saving the planet or the competitiveness of our agricultural sector, or the protection of digital rights versus innovation.”

Wettbewerbsfähigkeit: EU-Abgeordneter Markus Ferber (CSU) fordert neue Angebotspolitik
„Es ist richtig, dass das Thema Wettbewerbsfähigkeit in dieser Legislaturperiode politisch ganz hoch aufgehängt wird. In den vergangenen Jahren wurde die EU in allen Wettbewerbsfähigkeitsrankings nur so durchgereicht. Es braucht nun endlich eine Kehrtwende. Es geht um nichts weniger, als unseren Wohlstand langfristig zu sichern“, so der CSU-Europaabgeordnete und wirtschaftspolitische Sprecher der EVP-Fraktion im Europäischen Parlament, Markus Ferber, in Erwartung des Berichts des ehemaligen EZB-Chefs und italienischen Ministerpräsidenten Mario Draghi. Draghi stellt die Eckpunkte seines Berichts heute den EU-Botschaftern und Fraktionsvorsitzenden im Europäischen Parlament vor.
Für Ferber ist wichtig, dass die Kommission sich die Empfehlungen des Draghi-Berichts auch wirklich anschaut: „Es darf nicht passieren, was so häufig mit Expertenbericht und Strategiepapieren passiert: erst wird pompös präsentiert, dann landet der Bericht in der Schublade. Das Thema Wettbewerbsfähigkeit darf nicht einfach verpuffen.“
Angebotspolitik, keine Schuldenpolitik
Für den CSU-Wirtschaftspolitiker ist klar, was zu tun ist: „Wir brauchen vor allem eine neue Angebotspolitik: Bürokratieabbau, weniger Berichtspflichten, schnellere Genehmigungsverfahren, niedrigere Energiekosten und eine clevere Industriepolitik. Der Draghi-Bericht und die Kommission sollten sich darauf konzentrieren, wie wir dahin kommen.“
Ferber warnt aber auch: „Draghi sollte dem italienischen Reflex widerstehen, neue schuldenfinanzierte Ausgabenprogramme zu fordern. Der Europäische Rechnungshof hat gerade erst anschaulich darlegt, dass beim Corona-Aufbaufonds einiges im Argen liegt. Wenn wir uns nun wieder in Debatten um eine neue Fiskalkapazität verzetteln, droht die Wettbewerbsfähigkeitsagenda zu versanden.“
Kapitalmarktunion als Eckpfeiler des Binnenmarktes
Der CSU-Finanzexperte sieht vor allem das Projekt der Kapitalmarktunion als potentiellen Turbo für den Binnenmarkt und mehr Wettbewerbsfähigkeit: „Eine leistungsfähige Wirtschaft braucht leistungsfähige Kapitalmärkte. Es kann nicht sein, dass europäische Unternehmen für Börsengänge in die USA gehen statt in der EU zu bleiben. Wir brauchen ein leistungsfähiges Ökosystem für Finanzdienstleistungen – vom Börsengang bis zum Clearing. Dafür müssen die Mitgliedstaaten aber weg von ihren nationalen Eifersüchteleien und endlich einen europäischen Geist entwickeln.“
