Brussels, 6 January 2025
MEPs will travel to Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru to discuss issues relating to the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection’s legislative priorities.
The delegation will take place from 6 January until 10 January. The visit aims to support the Committee’s ongoing and future work on important legislative files in the digital sphere, but also product standards, quality assurance measures, consumer protection and e-commerce. The delegation also aims to enhance EU-India cooperation in these areas, promoting digital innovation and addressing challenges in e-commerce and consumer protection.
MEPs will visit Mumbai, the most important port city in India, as well as Pune, India’s pre-eminent centre of academia and business, and Bengaluru, the country’s so-called IT-capital. They will meet with Indian authorities responsible for digital regulation and consumer protection, civil society organisations, mainly in the area of consumer advocacy and protection, industry associations, including representatives of European businesses, leading tech companies and technological incubators, and academic experts.
The seven-member delegation will be led by Andreas Schwab (EPP, DE). Dimitris Tsiodras (EPP, EL), Laura Ballarín Cereza (S&D, ES), Idoia Mendia (S&D, ES), Virginie Joron (PfE, FR), Reinis Pozņaks (ECR, LV) and Stephanie Yon-Courtin (Renew, FR) will also be travelling as part of the delegation.
Andreas Schwab (EPP, DE), as the head of the delegation, said before departure: “This visit will help us broaden our understanding on several issues central to the legislative work of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee. We will discuss digital services, digital markets and Artificial Intelligence. We will look into public procurement, product safety and consumer protection. Additionally, we will also explore the impact of Indian exports on the EU’s internal market and discuss the implications of the EU’s Forced Labour Regulation.”
