Brussels, 4 July 2022
The European Commission today launched a public consultation and call for evidence on the new EU Global Health Strategy that will remain open for 12 weeks. Gathering evidence and views from citizens and stakeholders is essential for preparing a well-informed EU external health action strategy that responds to the challenges that have emerged since the 2010 Communication on the EU role in Global Health.
Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, said:
“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the gaps in our global health security architecture. As well as strengthening pandemic preparedness and response across the world, our EU Global Health Strategy will strengthen healthcare systems and deliver better healthcare for people everywhere, addressing the link between the health of humans, animals, plants and our environment. To achieve this, I call on all stakeholders to help us craft a strategy that responds to the important challenges we face together.”
Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, said:
“As part of the Global Gateway, we want to lead global action rooted in universal values of human rights, equality, solidarity and cooperation. Our new Global Health Strategy will contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals and be better prepared through reinforced partnerships. Health professionals, researchers, private sector, civil society and youth all have an important role to play in shaping and implementing this Strategy to make sure we reach our objective. We count on you to make your voice heard.”
The public consultation and call for evidence will be complemented with targeted consultations of key stakeholders, particularly representatives of national public authorities in the EU and partner countries, non-governmental organisations, academia, industry, health-related professional associations, patient associations and intergovernmental organisations, and evidence from other reliable sources. The consultation process began at the Global Health Policy Forum, co-organised by the Commission and civil society at the European Development Days.
