Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, is in Brazil from today until 4 May and will visit Costa Rica on 5 May. The Commissioner will seek to enhance the cooperation on deforestation-free supply chains, biodiversity and the circular economy, including as regards upcoming multilateral meetings.
Commissioner Sinkevičius will start his visit today with a roundtable on ‘Circular economy as a paradigm shift for industrial policies in Brazil and the EU’ and will then meet Geraldo Alckmin, Vice-President and Minister for Development, Industry, Trade and Service; Marina Silva, Minister for Environment and Climate Change; Carlos Favaro, Minister for Agriculture; André de Paula, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture; and Mauro Vieira, Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Tomorrow, the Commissioner will meet Cláudio Bomfim de Castro e Silva, Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and attend the signing of a Joint Declaration between the EU and the State of Rio de Janeiro for future cooperation on plastics and circular economy. He will also meet Aloizo Mercadante, President of the Brazilian National Development Bank, and Nilton Caldeira, Deputy Mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro. He will also launch the ‘2023 Roadshow for the EU-Brazil Circular economy solutions’.
On 5 May, Commissioner Sinkevičius will be in Costa Rica where he will attend the EU-Latin America and the Caribbean High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Climate Change. In the margins of the meeting, he will meet Franz Tattenbach, Minister for Environment and Energy of Costa Rica; Gersón Barrios Garrido, Minister for Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala; Diana Laguna Caicedo, Vice-Minister for Environment of Panama; as well as José Dávalos, Minister for Environment of Ecuador.
