Brussels, 11 November 2024
On Wednesday, Commissioner Iliana Ivanova will travel to Lisbon (Portugal) for the Web Summit to announce the winners of the European Capital of Innovation 2024 (iCapital) award, celebrating a decade of recognising cities that are leading the way in implementing innovative solutions for their citizens. This year’s finalists for the European Capital of Innovation category are Espoo (Finland), Turin (Italy) and West Midlands (UK). The finalists for the ‘European Emerging Cities Award’ are Braga (Portugal), Linz (Austria) and Oulu (Finland).
The Web Summit is an annual technology conference at which the Commission also organises several workshops. Tomorrow, the Commission will organise a workshop on ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Europe: Opening up opportunities for your business‘. The workshop will explain to participants how the EU supports innovative start-ups through initiatives such as AI factories and GenAI4EU. Secondly, the Commission will hold a masterclass on ‘Empowering businesses: Exploring EU digital identity wallets‘. EU digital identity wallets will open up new business and technical opportunities for businesses. This masterclass will guide participants on the regulation, architecture and potential of portfolios for companies.
Finally, the Commission will promote the InvestEU programme in a dedicated stand and organise specific sessions to present the opportunities it offers in terms of support for innovation and start-ups. In particular, the benefits of the InvestEU Portal will be presented, reaching an audience of innovators, investors and players in the European start-up ecosystem.
