Today, Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, is visiting Serbia. The visit takes place in the context of the strong cooperation between the European Union and Serbia in the fields of culture, education, youth, research and innovation.

Commissioner Gabriel will visit the primary and secondary school ‘Milan Petrovic’ in Novi Sad and deliver €20,000 of Assistive Technology equipment to the school, supporting the educational needs of pupils in Serbia. The EU supports the objective to ensure access to high-quality education and inclusive education in Serbia, in particular through Erasmus+.

She will also visit the OPENS Youth Centre in Novi Sad to learn more about the results of Novi Sad’s work as 2019 European Youth Capital, its youth policy priorities and the goals of the Serbian government’s new 2023-2030 Youth Strategy. The Centre’s collaborative projects are an example of how to empower young people to become engaged members of the European society in the spirit of the European Year of Youth. In addition, the Commissioner will visit the Gallery of Matica Srpska in Novi Sad to learn more about the successful implementation of Novi Sad European Capital of Culture 2022.

Commissioner Gabriel will also inaugurate a new building of the BioSense Institute together with Serbian Prime Minister, Ana Brnabic, which has been constructed in the context of the Horizon Europe 2020 Teaming project ANTARES. The Institute, a new Centre of Excellence, will lead Serbia’s innovation ecosystem forward and provide disruptive digital solutions in agriculture. Finally, the Commissioner will hold a press point together with the Serbian Prime Minister. The Commission remains committed to further integrate Serbia and the whole Western Balkan region, in line with the ambitions set out in the Western Balkan Agenda on innovation, research, education, culture, youth and sports.
