Brussels, 17 January 2023

Vice-President Dubravka Šuica and Art O’Leary, the CEO of Ireland’s Electoral Commission and Citizens’ Assemblies, are today launching the Deliberative Democracy Cohort of the Summit for Democracy.

The Summit for Democracy is a global gathering of 112 governments as well as representatives from civil society, international organisations and the business community, hosted by US President Joe Biden to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing democracies in the 21st century.

The Deliberative Democracy Cohort, one of the multi-stakeholder groups forming part of the Summit, will be co-led by the European Commission and the government of Ireland, with the support of the NewDemocracy Foundation. The Cohort aims at promoting deliberative democracy, through concrete commitments to be taken by stakeholders at national and international level.

The Cohort is today calling on stakeholders, including national governments, NGOs and relevant organisations, to sign a declaration on upholding democracy and deliberative democracy, to be taken forward for discussion at the Summit.

The Summit’s first meeting took place on 9 and 10 December 2021. The next meeting is scheduled for 29 and 30 March 2023. On the first day, government leaders will take part in a virtual plenary meeting. On the second day, government, civil society, and private sector representatives will gather in regional hybrid meetings in each of the five co-host countries. The Summit will conclude with a joint declaration.
