Brussels, 6 December 2023

Today, the Commission updated the European list of ship recycling facilities that are approved for recycling of large seagoing vessels sailing under an EU Member State flag. The list now contains 45 ship recycling facilities, including 26 yards in the EU, nine in Türkiye, seven in Norway, three in the United Kingdom and one in the United States. The updated list renews the inclusion of two yards located in Türkiye and one in the United States, as well as extending the inclusion of one yard located in Finland and five in Norway. The new list removes three facilities located respectively in Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway because they no longer provide ship recycling services.

To prevent environmentally-damaging practices, the EU Ship Recycling Regulation has required all large sea-going vessels sailing under an EU Member State flag to use an approved ship recycling facility included in the European List of ship recycling facilities. To be included, a facility has to comply with a number of safety and environmental requirements. The Commission regularly updates the list based on evaluations carried out by national authorities – for facilities located in the EU – or by the Commission itself – for facilities outside of the EU that apply to be included, except for Norway and Northern Ireland.
