Today, the European Commission has appointed María Antonia Martinez Luengo as Director ‘Macro-economic statistics’ at the Directorate-General for statistics of the Commission (DG EUROSTAT), responsible for providing high quality statistics and data on Europe in partnership with the national statistical authorities of the EU Member States and for proposing all EU statistical legislation. The date of effect is to be determined at a later stage.

Ms Martinez Luengo, a Spanish national, has extensive professional managerial experience of almost 30 years in the field of quantitative economics and statistical operations. She brings with her strong statistical leadership and strategic management skills in essential statistical areas, along with strong expertise in the management of dissemination and communication of statistics and data.

Since September 2015, Martinez Luengo has served as Director of the National Accounts Department and as member of the Governing Board of the Spanish Statistical Office (INE). Earlier in her career, she also worked as Deputy Director of Economic Accounts and Employment at INE.

María Antonia Martinez Luengo started her career as researcher and an associate lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, teaching statistics and probability. She holds a PhD in applied economics.

Furthermore, the Commission has appointed Gabriele Semeraro as Director ‘Government Finance Statistics (GFS)’ at the Directorate-General for statistics of the Commission (DG EUROSTAT), responsible for providing high quality statistics and data on Europe in partnership with the national statistical authorities of the EU Member States and for proposing all EU statistical legislation. The date of effect is to be determined at a later stage.

Mr Semeraro, an Italian national, brings extensive professional experience of almost 24 years in managerial roles in the fields of macroeconomic statistics and public finance. His proven ability to lead and motivate a large multinational team, efficiently set priorities and objectives, and allocate resources accordingly, along with his thorough understanding of the development, production, and use of European statistics, will serve him well in his new role.

Since August 2019, Gabriele Semeraro has served as Director of Financial Accounts and Statistical Methodology at the Bank of Italy. Previously, he was Senior Advisor to the Presidency of the Committee on Monetary, Financial and Balance of Payments Statistics (CMFB), which supports the Commission on key issues related to monetary, financial, and balance of payments statistics. Mr Semeraro holds a PhD in Mathematical Economics and a degree in Economics.
