Ahead of the EU-African Union in Brussels, MEPs will host a high-level pre-summit meeting with African counterparts and civil society on Thursday.

On 10 February, MEPs from the Committees on Development, Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittees on Human Rights and Security and Defence, members of the Delegations for relations with South Africa and to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, and the Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament (DPAP) will host a high-level pre-summit meeting in advance of the European Union (EU) – African Union (AU) Summit in Brussels on 17-18 February.

The meeting will be opened by the Chair of the DPAP, María Soraya Rodriguez Ramos MEP, and will include debates on the common challenges faced by both continents, including COVID-19 recovery, investment, boosting vaccination, food security and climate change, gender equality, good governance, and peace and security.

Members of the Pan African Parliament and African members of the EU-ACP Joint Parliamentary Assembly have been invited, as well as external speakers, including:

  • Dina Vardaramatou, Secretary General, European Women’s Lobby
  • Aboubacar Kampo, Director of Health Programme division, UNICEF and
  • Maximo Torero Cullen, Chief Economist, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
