Dr Andrea Ammon’s mandate as ECDC Director has been extended by the Centre’s Management Board (MB) until 15 June 2024. This decision follows the imminent ending of her five-year tenure, which began on 1June 2017. The extension was supported by all MB members during an extraordinary session that took place today. It is expected that a new Director will be appointed in 2024.

Dr Ammon will continue to lead ECDC for the next two years, with a special focus on the implementation of a reinforced mandate as part of a stronger EU Health Union and the execution of the ECDC Strategy 2021-2027, in collaboration with EU and EEA countries, partners and stakeholders.

Dr Ammon has been with ECDC since its early years. She was the Head of the Surveillance Unit, Deputy to the Director, and Head of Resource Management and Coordination Unit before she was asked to serve as Acting Director in March 2015.

Before joining the ECDC, she served in several roles at the Robert Koch Institute in Germany, including her role as Head of the Department for Infectious Disease Epidemiology. In this capacity, she maintained and further developed the German national surveillance system, coordinated the national outbreak response team for current and emerging infections, and provided scientific advice for government ministries, Members of Parliament, and the public.
