Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee elected Dragoş Pîslaru (Renew, Romania) as Chair for the second half of the legislative term, on Monday.

Dragoş Pîslaru was elected Member of European Parliament in 2019. For the past two and a half years, he was the EMPL coordinator for the Renew group.

Mr Pîslaru said after his election: “It is a great honour for me to be able to serve as Chairperson to the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament. From the beginning of my political career, I was invested in delivering robust and innovative social policies to our citizens, creating the tools needed to protect the vulnerable, ensuring the development of a strong and sustainable social impact economy, avoiding silo policies and creating access and opportunities for all.

I am sure that in the coming period the European Parliament will remain instrumental in meeting the needs of all Europeans, following the very difficult period all of us have been through.”

Members also elected Elisabetta Gualmini (S&D, IT), Leila Chaibi (The Left, FR), Romana Tomc (EPP, SL) as new EMPL vice-chairs. Katrin Langensiepen (Greens/EFA, DE) was re-elected as EMPL vice-chair.

Background

The process for the election of committee bureau is defined in Rule 213 of the Rules of Procedure.

The Chair presides over committee and coordinators’ meetings, represents the committee both within and outside the European Parliament and presides legislative negotiations led by the committee. Furthermore, the Chair has authority over voting procedures and rules on the admissibility of amendments.

Committee Chair and Vice-Chairs form the bureau, which is responsible for their respective committee’s smooth functioning. The committee bureau holds office for two and a half years (half of the legislature).
