New plans to make more data accessible to start-ups and businesses to stimulate innovation will be up for a debate and a vote on Wednesday. A press conference will take place at 10.30.

The Data Governance Act (DGA), already agreed by MEPs with EU governments, aims to boost data sharing and help unlock the potential of Artificial Intelligence. It establishes new EU rules on the neutrality of data marketplaces, facilitates the reuse of certain data held by the public sector – e.g. certain health, agricultural or environmental data – and creates common European data spaces in strategic domains, including health, environment, energy, agriculture, mobility, finance, manufacturing, public administration and skills.

Background
According to the European Commission, the amount of data generated by public bodies, businesses and citizens is expected to multiply five-fold between 2018 and 2025. The new rules would allow these data to be used, paving the way for sectoral European data spaces benefitting society, citizens and companies.
Updated COVID rules
Accredited journalists wishing to attend the meeting and press conference in person can do so. As of 14 March, some preventive measures have been lifted but all people entering Parliament’s buildings are still requested to present a valid EU Digital COVID Certificate, including journalists. Both digital and paper formats of the EU Digital COVID Certificate or of a recognised equivalent certificate will be accepted. Proof of a negative result of a PCR test carried out within the last 48 hours in Belgium, Luxembourg or France will also be accepted. Please note that the compulsory wearing of a medical face mask remains in place.
