Committee and political groups’ meetings

Digital euro. The Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will discuss the latest developments of the digital euro project with Piero Cipollone, member of the European Central Bank’s Executive Board. The digital euro project was launched in July 2021. MEPs will start working on the draft regulation for establishing the Digital Euro in the coming weeks (Monday).

2023 natural disasters. The Budgets Committee will vote to mobilise the European Union Solidarity Fund to provide assistance to Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece and France to deal with the effects of six natural disasters that occurred in 2023 (Monday).

2024 Sakharov Prize. MEPs and the political groups will present their nominations for the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the highest tribute paid by the EU in the field of human rights, at a joint meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Human Rights Subcommittee and Development Committee. The vote on the three finalists will take place in October (Thursday).

Priorities of the Hungarian Presidency. Hungary’s ministers will present their priorities in the Environment, Food Safety and Public Health Committee and the Development Committee. Hungary holds the rotating Presidency of the Council until the end of 2024 (Monday and Thursday respectively).

President’s diary. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will be in New York for the United Nations General Assembly on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, the President will participate in the World Economic Forum Roundtable on ‘Advancing a Global Agenda through a Geopolitical Recession’, meet the Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama, deliver a keynote speech at the Concordia Summit and attend the event on the “Sustainable Development Goal 4: Educating for the Next Generation” hosted by UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown and the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley. On Tuesday, she will attend the opening session of the UN General Assembly, meet Tony Blair, Executive Chair of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, and deliver a keynote speech on ‘Citizen Social Responsibility: Bolstering Democracies through Civic Engagement’, organised by the Clinton Global Initiative. On Thursday, President Metsola will deliver a speech on ‘The Renewal of the EU’ at the closing session of Campus FAES 2024, organised by the FAES Foundation.
