Answer given by Mr Wojciechowski on behalf of the European Commission
(4.1.2023)
The Commission has outlined several measures to address high prices, both for agricultural producers as well as for consumers. The Communication on Safeguarding food security and reinforcing the resilience of food systems1 finds that food availability is currently not at stake in the EU but EU food affordability for vulnerable consumers is a matter of concern.
The newly set-up European Food Security Crisis preparedness and response Mechanism2 will carry out a thorough mapping of risks and vulnerabilities of the EU food supply chain, followed by recommendations and appropriate mitigation measures. The recently published Communication on ensuring availability and affordability of fertilisers3 presents a wide range of actions and guidance on how to tackle the challenges that EU farmers and industry, as well as developing countries, are currently facing. The overall resilience and sustainability of our food systems in the medium and long-term is addressed.
Moreover, the Commission has proposed several measures to tackle high energy prices that also benefit agriculture and food undertakings: to reduce energy demand4, ensure alternative supplies and accelerate the roll-out of renewables5, limit the impact of electricity prices for consumers and a gas price Market Correction Mechanism678.
