Brussels, 11 July 2022

The Commission has approved today a new protected geographical indication (PGI) from Hungary: the “Derecske alma”, apples grown in the Derecske region. “Derecske alma” have a firm flesh, are low in acidity and are slightly sweet. They are known for their intense colours and being rich in calcium and magnesium. These characteristics are a result of the cultivation of the trees as the soil of the region is ideal for apple trees. Thanks to its high calcium content, “Derecske alma” can be stored for extended periods with hardly any impact on its natural qualities. The new denomination will be added to the list of existing 1586 agricultural products and foodstuffs. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information online on quality schemes and in our GIView portal.
