Finland: Consultations begin for government statement on equality and non-discrimination

In July, the Government appointed a working group to prepare a government statement to Parliament on promoting equality and non-discrimination in Finnish society. The preparations have now progressed to the consultation phase. The first consultations will be held with Ombudsman for Equality Rainer Hiltunen, Non-Discrimination Ombudsman Kristina Stenman, Ombudsman for Children Elina Pekkarinen and Ombudsman for Older People Päivi Topo.

Netherlands prohibits Holocaust denial

It will become explicitly prohibited to publicly condone, deny or trivialize the horrors of the Holocaust. The Cabinet has resolved this at the suggestion of Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius of Justice and Security. Discrimination and racism are already prohibited. With this ban, victims, and their relatives, of genocide and other war crimes will soon also receive specific protection against particularly offensive statements that deny and trivialize these types of international crimes.

European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day: Statement by EU Commission President von der Leyen, VP Jourová and Commissioner Dalli

In 2015, the European Parliament declared 2 August as the annual European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day to commemorate the 500,000 European Roma murdered in Nazi-occupied Europe, who represented at least a quarter of their total population at that time. The European Commission and EU Member States have committed to work against antigypsyism as part of the EU Roma Strategic Framework, adopted in 2020, and the Council Recommendation on Roma.

InvestEU kickstarts €250m of investment

The InvestEU Investment Committee approved a new guarantee, bringing the total of operations financed by the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) and backed by InvestEU to five. With this, the overall amount of the InvestEU guarantee approved for CEB projects has reached €80 million.
